A recent market research survey by the BBC puts London as the World’s best city destination for 2016.
London is the political, economic, fashion and cultural capital of Britain, and its world-class tourist attractions are distinguished all across the globe. The Greater London area is overflowing with attractions for visitors of all ages. With 30 historic gardens and 123 historic buildings, London also has over 200 museums, 600 cinema screens, and 108 music halls. The history of the city bounces back over thousands of years, and the city boasts four breathtaking World Heritage Sites: the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Maritime Greenwich and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Then, there is the river Thames which runs right through the heart of London, from Richmond in the west, through the central London borough of Westminster, to Greenwich in the east. River cruises are a great way to see our amazing, monumental city and about one-third of London is dedicated to parks and open spaces, so there are plenty of places to relax on the fine, British summer days.

Home to the Royal family, the beautiful Buckingham Palace is one of the last working royal palaces in the world, and the Queen’s official home. Every August and September, when the Queen travels to Scotland to stay at Balmoral, Buckingham Palace opens its doors to the public to see. The birth of Princess Charlotte in May 2015 may also have contributed to London’s renewed popularity as a visitor destination crowning it as the worlds rated best city for 2016.
Chris Gottlieb, on behalf of Visit London, the mayor’s official promotional company for London, commented on the rating with… “Our latest tourism campaign, Fans of London, will shine a spotlight on some very exciting events to come, including the celebrations around 400 years of Shakespeare’s legacy and the first international exhibition of the Rolling Stones, exhibitionist.”
London is incredibly well-connected, with five international airports and the high-speed Eurostar rail link. More than 50 countries are within just a three-hour flight time and 310 international destinations have direct links to London. Even better, it is the centre of the world – and a world in one city, with a treasure of different cultures and communities across the capital. It has more than 300 languages and cuisine from over 70 countries.
There are over 6,000 restaurants in London so you’ll never be short of new places to eat. With 55 amazing Michelin Star restaurants and many celebrity chefs based here, the dining cannot be faulted. Although, there are a lot of cheaper just as good options too.
Holding London Fashion Week twice a year which is a worldwide fashion event that brings some of the most cherished and admired designers every year to the city, London is one of the four fashion capitals in the world. According to the Globe Shopper City Index, London is also Europe’s best shopping destination. Whether you head to the West End, Westfield London or a quirky London market, there’s a huge range of places to buy gifts, fashion and food.
