Types of Product Testing
Product tests use quantitative research methods and tend to be carried out in one of two ways:
- IHUT stands for In-Home Usage Testing where the product is tested in the participant’s own home.
- CLT stands for Central Location Testing (or Central Location Test), where consumers test a product in a central venue. This is often referred to as a ‘Hall Test where participants are recruited in the street according to set criteria based on the characteristics of the target consumer profile
Both CLTs and IHUT research interviewing can be conducted via a face-to-face interview, online survey, telephone interview or pen & paper questionnaire (including a diary) as the project requires.
Advantages of Central Location Testing
CLTs offer the opportunity for relatively fast turnaround of results – the fieldwork can be completed in a day or two, with results following the same week. The particular benefit of CLT is that they offer a controlled environment with interviewers and support staff on hand to help respondents through a test.
With central location testing (CLT) facilities across the UK, we are one of the leading product testing companies and our research is designed to examine the competitive landscape and inform the development of new products by understanding customer needs and wants and to assess rational and emotional reactions to help optimise products and services. Our more advanced market research techniques allow us to also measure the potential demand for new products with confidence.
Advantages of In home User Testing
IHUTs offers the opportunity for consumers to use and test products in a natural environment, i.e. the real life setting of their home. This arguably produces more faithful evaluations in respect of product assessments and product satisfaction. In-Home Testing also allows the possibility for longer test period (e.g. a week or even weeks). A further advantage is that it allows for feedback and input from other household members which may be important in assessing reactions.
Ultimately both IHUTs and CLTs have particular merits for product and usability testing. Vision One have extensive experience of both types of product testing both in the UK and Internationally.
