Information Commissioners Office (ICO)

What Is the ICO?

The ICO is the UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. The ICO is in part responsible for GDPR (General Data Protection Legislation). We live in a data driven world and GDPR is here for the benefit of everyone in regards into accessing and influencing how companies use your data. What is a Data Protection Officer

Data Protection Officers, sometimes referred to as DPO, are responsible for overseeing data protection strategy and implementation to ensure compliance with GDPR requirements. The role of the DPO, includes:

  • Educating the company and employees on important compliance requirements
  • Training staff involved in data processing
  • Conducting audits to ensure compliance and address potential issues proactively
  • Serving as the point of contact between the company and GDPR Supervisory Authorities
  • Monitoring performance and providing advice on the impact of data protection efforts
  • Maintaining comprehensive records of all data processing activities conducted by the company, including the purpose of all processing activities, which must be made public on request
  • Informing subjects about how their data is being used, their rights to have their personal data erased, and what measures the company has put in place to protect their personal information
