The Challenge
Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is the statutory body responsible for commissioning local health services in Ashton, Leigh and Wigan. The CCG covers a population of 320,000 people and comprises GPs from 65 practices.
Research Approach
We conducted a large scale on-street survey across 28 fieldwork days amongst residents of Wigan CCG area. This survey showed a positive response to the new service overall and demonstrated that it was attractive to many of the sub-groups identified as having less access to the GP services. However, the survey also revealed that some sectors of the population were experiencing considerable difficulties accessing GP services. Vision One were therefore asked to conduct a further stage of qualitative research designed to provide insights into the experience of these groups.
Research Findings
Our research identified that the new service would help Wigan CCG’s strategic aim of improving the quality of care provided by GPs. As a result, a clear recommendation was made to launch the new service. The new extended hours service was introduced in several centres across Wigan borough. As part of the launch of the service Vision One was invited to present the survey findings to a group of approximately 100 GPs.
